Over the past few years I’ve received lots of questions thru my Instagram account about the area we live in and mainly about Crab Island in Destin. I always try to answer each one with as many details as I can, but rather than doing that each time I get a question, I thought I would just make one blog post about the best way to get out to Crab Island, then I can just share my blog post over and over so it’s kind of a “win win” for us all. In case you aren’t familiar with what or where this magical Crab Island is, I will fill you in on those deets first.
Crab Island is a very popular destination located in Destin Florida. Technically it’s not an island, but rather just a large sandbar that sits beside the North side of the Marler Bridge. (Also known as the Destin Bridge) It is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike where you can hang out on the water and enjoy the entire day with your family and friends. The water in that area ranges from 2 feet to 10 feet deep, being only waist deep in most areas. So it is perfect for lounging around, tanning, people watching, snorkeling and swimming.
Crab Island has a bit of a reputation of being a party scene, (which it totally can be) but it is very family friendly as well. I recommend going in the morning with smaller children because most of the adults don’t roll in until later in the day. And if you are wanting to totally avoid the party scene, then just be smart about when you go. Obviously Spring Break is a BAD IDEA, or any major holiday as well. Those days attract a lot more people to the area than usual. And if it is the party scene that you are wanting, then you’re in luck, because Crab Island can be one big amazing party!
The only way to get out to Crab Island is by boat, but I can’t tell you how many people I have had ask if they can just walk out there. LOL. It does almost look like you could if you were sitting on the opposite side of the bridge though. But I don’t recommend that you try it since there is a very, very deep boat channel that runs right thru crab island that you would have to swim thru to reach the island and the currents in the area are very strong! So just be smart and hire someone to get you there SAFELY. And the answer to that problem is CRAB ISLAND WATER TAXI! This is a fairly new business in the area that I am super excited about. Matter of fact, the first time I saw all that they offered, I had one of those “why the hell didn’t I think of this idea” moments. It is freaking BRILLIANT!

So let me tell you what all they can do for you. (Pretty much everything other than putting your sunscreen on your back for you.) They have thought of everything you need to have the best day out in this gorgeous paradise! They offer a water taxi out to the island, and back, pontoon boat rentals and jet ski rentals too. But wait, it gets better. Included in the price of the water taxi is tons of amenities!

One of my favorite things about them is that they offer covered pic nick style table seating and covered areas so that you don’t have to be in the blazing sun all day if you don’t want too. They also have live music playing from their main area and tons of fun floats and inter tubes. If that doesn’t already have you wanting to go, you have to go check out their website because their pictures will have you planning your trip to Destin in no time!
