I have wanted a gallery wall for years but every time I brought up the idea to my husband, he seemed less than thrilled. Not because he didn’t want a gallery wall in our home but because he knew that meant he would be hanging a ton of stuff for me and that it would have to be perfectly straight. But after months of talking about them and showing him inspiration on Pinterest he finally gave me the okay and said lets do it! So, the first step to a great gallery wall is definitely to look for lot’s of inspiration. (And that means you head on over to Pinterest!).
I have already saved you some time by pinning tons of gallery wall inspiration and tips on how to make them over on my Home Decor and Decorating board. You can view my board here:
Next, whatever you do, don’t let yourself start to feel overwhelmed. There are millions of different ways you could decorate your wall but the most important thing is to just make sure that the items you choose to use on the wall reflect your taste and style. So many designers take themselves way to seriously and that takes all of the fun out of decorating. So have fun and start choosing items that are a reflection of who you and your family are. In my house, we serve the Lord proudly so I knew I wanted something to incorporate our faith. And I found this gorgeous wood sign at my local Hobby Lobby that I knew would be a prefect piece to start with. They actually still carry this picture on their website so if you are interested in purchasing one for yourself, you can get it here:
Then, once you buy that first piece you just kinda get excited and then it’s a lot easier from there. I say just go with your gut, if you like something and feel like it would look good in your home then just go for it. I knew that I wanted the word GATHER somewhere on my wall but I was thinking originally that it would be a wooden sign. But then when I stumbled across the gorgeous galvanized metal word I thought it would add a nice rustic touch to my wall. And since we had kind of been leaning more towards a modern rustic farmhouse style I thought this would incorporate nicely. I believe they still carry it online and in stores at Hobby Lobby in case your interested.
Initials, Monograms and family names always make good choices as pieces for your wall. As do, family photos, favorite quotes, sentimental things, and clocks are always nice too. I saw where one family had hung grandpa’s Fedora hat on their gallery wall and I think that is an absoultey precious idea. You could use your babies first pair of shoes, or add a shadow box with his/her first outfit. I mean seriously the possibilities are endless guys!
And last but not least, trying to figure out where to put everything can definitely seem a little overwhelming. But there are several great diagrams available for free online and I even pinned a few of them on my Pinterest board that I shared above. But most of those are for your standard square layouts of mostly framed pictures. And as you can see, I forgo the family pictures and went for all sorts of shapes and sizes of things that just spoke to me. So what I did was just simply lay everything out all over my living room floor so that I could visually “see” what my wall was going to look like. Then honestly from there, we just sort of winged it. I had Allen hang my large clock first since I knew that I wanted it to be the highest item and then we just held the different pieces up to the wall and basically eye balled them where I wanted them to go. For the most part I went with my first instinct but there was one thing that I ended up not liking where we had put it so I had him take it down and move it. And if you look at my picture closely, you will see that our items are in no real way symmetrical. And I think that by not having all the pieces perfectly aligned it actually gave our wall much more character. Now obviously I am biased because I love our wall, but for our first time attempting one I think we did a pretty great job. I hope that you have enjoyed my simple tips how to create your own gallery wall. I love home decor and design so much, so I am hoping to incorporate more and more of these types of posts here on my blog. Please let me know if that is something that you would like to see here on TSLW Blog or if it interested you at all.
